Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico
 |
Travel distance from San Juan: 108 mi (about 2 hours 31 mins)
|
Background:
Cabo Rojo borders the Caribbean Sea and the Mona Passage. Apparently Cabo Rojo got its name from the mineral formation found along its coast, which make the waters appear reddish. Cabo is the Spanish word for tip, analogous to the English word Cape; the word Rojo translates to red, hence Cabo Rojo.
This region remains relatively unvisited, and feels beautifully remote. As Puerto Ricans themselves know, the southwest coast promises lesser-known delights such as Cabo Rojo, Guánica and San Germán, where the dry climate and rural atmosphere make for a different kind of tropical paradise.
